Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie is the 2023 two-part director's cut of the computer-animated superhero comedy film PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, based on the television series PAW Patrol created by Keith Chapman. The film's ensemble voice cast includes Berkley Silverman, Marsai Martin, Kim Kardashian, Rob Lowe, Gabrielle Union, Callum Shoniker, and Mateo Carnovale reprising their roles from the first film, with Nylan Parthipan and Luxton Handspiker returning in new roles, and Mckenna Grace, Taraji P. Henson, Christian Convery, Christian Corrao, James Marsden, Kristen Bell, and Finn Lee-Epp joining the voice cast. It follows Chase (Convery) and Skye (Grace) recruiting the PAW Patrol and the Olympians to save Adventure City from Victoria Vance (Henson), Mayor Humdinger (Ron Pardo), and Cronus (David Kaye) before the supervillains try to steal the pups' crystals from a magical meteor.

A sequel for Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie was confirmed in November 2021. Cal Brunker, Jennifer Dodge, and Bob Barlen were all set to return by the end of 2021. In 2022, Snoop Dogg joined the voice cast as Snoop, respectively, with further casting in 2023. The film drew inspiration from various superhero films such as Shazam! (2019) and Black Adam (2022).

Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie was produced by Nickelodeon Movies, Columbia Pictures, and Spin Master Entertainment, and released on Paramount+ on September 29, 2023, which was the same release date for the film's theatrical cut. Like its predecessor, the film was well-received by critics, who claimed it superior over its theatrical version. A sequel is in development.

Plot[]

Part One[]

In ancient Egypt, Anubis, a Bull Terrier puppy, is suddenly transported to Tartarus, a deep abyss located in another dimension. There, he meets Shazam, an ancient Great Dane who has searched for someone pure of heart to bestow his power and name as champion. Anubis is given the powers of Shazam, transforming him into the civilization's potential heroic champion. Tempted by Cronus, the king of the Titans, to use his powers for his own personal gain, he corrupts the gift and is banished across the universe as a result.

In the present day, after the battle of Adventure City,[1] meteor expert Victoria Vance and Bear, Vance's pet Tibetan Mastiff, steal a giant electromagnet from a scrapyard owned by Hank and Janet and set the scrapyard ablaze. Ryder and the PAW Patrol pups—Chase, Skye, Rocky, Zuma, Marshall, Rubble, Liberty, Everest, and Tracker—extinguish the fire before it can spread. Though the rescue is successful, Everest feels like she has been unappreciated and hopes to prove herself.

Later that evening, the citizens of Adventure City and news reporter Sam Stringer gather outside the PAW Patrol's headquarters as they wait for a planetary alignment. Unbeknownst to them, the aligning of the planets allows Cronus to escape Tartarus and overpower Shazam. In an abandoned observatory, Vance uses the stolen electromagnet to create her meteor magnet. She uses it to snatch a magical meteor, but it backfires, causing the meteor to head straight for the city. Ryder and the PAW Patrol notice this and immediately warn the city's people before the meteor crash-lands, destroying their headquarters in the process. The PAW Patrol take the meteor to Camp PAW, a summer camp for pups and kittens with superpowers on Olympus, to analyze it.

That night, Skye is awoken by a strange glow emitting from the meteor. The meteor cracks open, revealing crystals contained inside. Shazam chooses Skye to be his new champion and, by saying his name, she, Chase, Zuma, Rubble, Rocky, and Marshall are transformed into the Mighty Pups, gained with superpowers from the crystals attached to their pup tags. While Skye and the Mighty Pups clash with Cronus in Adventure City, Everest, Tracker, and Liberty are assigned by Ryder to look after the Junior Patrollers. They meet an Australian Kelpie with superhuman agility named Sylvia, Abyssinian kitten twins named Castor and Pollux, a Russian Blue and ferret named Blaze and Arnold, and other Olympians who train Liberty, Everest, Tracker, and the Junior Patrollers in the ways of fighting, including Chiron, Dionysus, Hercules, Athena, Ares, Zeus, and Poseidon.

After Vance ends up arrested for her actions from the meteor incident, she escapes along with Mayor Humdinger, Harold, the Cheetah, Ruben, the Kitten Catastrophe Crew to steal the crystals. They sneak over to an airport where they find and board Humdinger's private airplane. During the flight, they set a trap by destroying one of the plane's engines and calling the PAW Patrol afterwards. Skye engages Vance, Humdinger, Harold, and the kittens in a battle, but ends up losing her crystal to the gang. They quickly parachute out, leaving Skye trapped in the plane as it loses control. With the airport too far away, Ryder has the pups clear Main Street to make a runway for Skye. Once there, a distraught Skye lands the plane for a rough landing. Afterwards, Everest reveals her backstory to Skye and how she was unable to get her share of food and never picked by potential families, forgotten and alone. Skye replies that she was left in a drafty winter barn, nearly perishing in the snow, but found and cared for by Maverick and Penny.

One night, Vance meets Cronus, making a deal to team up in defeating the Mighty Pups. Everest decides to take the pups' crystals to attempt to retrieve Skye's crystal, joined by Skye. However, they become trapped in a force field, causing Vance to steal the rest of the crystals. Upon waking up, Ryder realizes in shock that the crystals are missing. As the Junior Patrollers are sent home due to their program canceled by Ryder, Sylvia speaks with Maverick and Penny, promising to find Skye and bring her and Everest home. While Cronus begins his attack, Sylvia and Shazam assemble a team to find Everest and Skye, consisting of Ryder, Mayor Goodway, Chickaletta, Hank, Janet, Bruce, Chase, Marshall, Zuma, Rocky, Rubble, Tracker, Liberty, Sweetie, Artemis, Apollo, Blaze, and Arnold.

Production[]

Development[]

In November 2017, Ronnen Harary confirmed that Spin Master was "currently considering whether to extend the PAW Patrol franchise into feature films at some point in the next 12 to 24 months". Animation tests were conducted in 2017 to measure how the characters "would translate onto the big screen" and the company developed a film script.

Pre-production[]

After PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie was greenlit by Paramount Pictures in November 2021, a director's cut for that film was in development, despite WindowsMyers2018's earlier claims that Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie was viewed as a series finale. The attires used by the pups from Mighty Pups (2018) were confirmed to return.

Writing[]

In January 2023, Shane Morris, Cal Brunker, and Bob Barlen were confirmed to write the film's screenplay, with an original story by Zack Snyder, Andrew Guerdat, and Steven Sullivan. According to WindowsMyers2018, he drew inspiration from Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films' Shazam! (2019) and Black Adam (2022) for the portrayals of the addition of new Super-Pups. He later revealed that The Mighty Movie would have an equal focus on mythical and incarnated original characters, drawing inspiration from his favorite superhero films, including The Incredibles (2004), Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and Super Buddies (both 2013), Wonder Woman (2017), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), DC League of Super-Pets (2022), and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). He has also cited Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2014, 2020), The Flash (2023), Max Fleischer's Superman cartoons, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Class of the Titans (2005-2008), and Secret Invasion (2023) as additional inspiration for The Mighty Movie.

After previously being marketed for Mighty Pups, Super Paws, Tracker makes his official first appearance in his Mighty Pups attire. The film was noted to explore Tracker learning how to control plant life in accelerating its growth. On the character's role in the film, Myers compared Mr. Nibbles to Romeo (whom Shoniker also voiced) in PJ Masks (season 5-present), citing similarities for their goals of world domination.

Casting[]

JohanssonSchwarzenegger

Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie features Scarlett Johansson and Arnold Schwarzenegger providing the voices for Blaze and Arnold, respectively.

In November 2021, WindowsMyers2018 announced that Martin, Pardo, Silverman, Shoniker, and Carnovale would headline the voice cast. In 2022, Roberts was announced to voice Mayor Goodway, replacing Rudolph from Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie, respectively, while Hailee Steinfeld was to voice a new character in the film, later announced to voice Sylvia, named after the character from the television series, in October 2022. Also in October, Dogg was reported to voice a Doberman Pinscher named Snoop.

In January 2023, Black and Johnson were announced to appear in "surprising cameos" according to WindowsMyers2018. Shortly after, Myers announced that Johnson would voice Anubis and disclosed his favorite casting choices for the role of Apollo: Cavill, who played Superman in the DC Extended Universe (2013-2022), and Zachary Levi, who played Shazam in Shazam (2019) and its then-upcoming sequel, Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023); Cavill ultimately got the role of Jupiter. Rudolph entered negotiations to return from Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie, although she would not voice Mayor Goodway. Rudolph was revealed to be voicing Athena; Kim, Gonzalez, and West were revealed to be voicing Nano, Tot, and Mini; Corrao, Parthipan, Handspiker, Grace, Convery, and Lee-Epp would replace Marshall, Simons, Hedley, Bartlam, Armitage, and Brisbin as Marshall, Zuma, Rubble, Skye, Chase, and Ryder, respectively; and Gadot, Hiddleston, Bell, Howery, Marsden, and Williams were added.

In February 2023, Momoa and Willingham were announced to voice Lobo and Thor; Willingham's role references the Marvel Comics character with the same name in the Marvel Animated Universe (2012-2017), and Myers lauded Willingham for resembling the voice of Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, unveiling that he couldn't cast Hemsworth as Thor at the time due to his inherited two copies of the APOE4 gene to eventually develop Alzheimer's disease. In March 2023, Hounsou was cast in the voice role of a dog counterpart of the wizard Shazam, reprising his role from the DC Extended Universe, and Black was confirmed to voice a Tibetan Mastiff named Bear. In April 2023, Rock was confirmed to have a cameo appearance as a cat (later revealed to be named Achilles) and Witwer, Drummond, and Bennett were cast as the voices of Hades, Hephaestus, and Mercury.

In July 2023, Affleck, Fisher, Johansson, and Schwarzenegger were confirmed to have voice cameos as Pluto, Vulcan, Blaze, and Arnold. In August 2023, Diamantopoulos and Chiklis were added as Hercules and Zeus, replacing planned appearances by Josh Keaton and Russell Crowe, while Crowe, Stanley Tucci, and Kevin McKidd were added in minor roles as Saturn, Dionysus, and Poseidon. Shortly after, Shepard was reported to be reprising his role as Ruben. In September 2023, Dawson and Brosnan were added as Persephone and Chiron; Dawson and Brosnan previously played different iterations in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010).

In November 2023, Vardalos and Eckstein were reported to voice Hestia and Persephone, with Eckstein replacing Dawson. The following month, Mitchell and Dahan was announced to voice Sylvia and Pollux, replacing Steinfeld and Ian Ho. In March 2024, it was revealed that Ho was cast as The Copycat, replacing Shoniker.

Post-production and animation[]

One of the film's early drafts included the concept of a multiverse within the PAW Patrol universe. As such, alternate variants of Chase and Skye were set to appear, also voiced by Convery and Grace. The multiverse's dimensions would have included Earth-23 (home of the Council of the Super-Pups and the alternate Chase and Skye) and Earth-13 (the mainstream universe of the PAW Patrol franchise, later reclassified as Earth-1). Myers was considering the following options: if the multiverse subplot was retained, The Mighty Movie would reboot the PAW Patrol franchise as a whole; if the multiverse subplot was cut from the final version, The Mighty Movie would continue the storyline that was first introduced in Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie. Some Wandom Noob referred to Earth-13 and Earth-23 as "the main timeline" and "the Super-Pups timeline". In August 2023, the multiverse subplot was reportedly removed from the latest cut.

In October 2023, Charlotte Stent was reported to voice Chloe, a Dalmatian who is Marshall's sister, but ultimately did not appear due to constant rewrites. Jackson Reid, Logan Nicholson, and Shazdeh Kapadia were set to voice Hector, Paris, and Cassandra, a triplet of Siamese kittens, in mid-2023. Reid, Nicholson, and Kapadia's cameos, along with ones by Saint West as Meteor Max, Richard Binsley as Rocket, and Paul Braunstein as the tough guy, were soon reported to have been cut after the film's ending was changed to typically serve as a teaser for Cat Pack: The Movie, which was treated as a standalone sequel to The Mighty Movie.

Like its predecessor, Guru Studio and Mikros Image worked on the animation of the film. Sylvia was intended to look identical to Chase, excluding the tail and fur patterns; she was originally going to be a Border Collie during early development. In response to the controversy involving Marley depicted as a black sheep in the PAW Patrol episode "Pups Save a Herd", he was recolored with brown fur for his Mighty Movie appearance.

In support of a director's cut release of The Mighty Movie were Roberts, Dietz, Dahan, Kim, Gonzalez, Pesino, Varughese, Braunstein, Remi Tuckman, Tymika Tafari, Stacey DePass, Mary Gibbs, and PAW Patrol songwriter Scott Simons.

Music[]

In January 2023, Pinar Toprak was hired as the film's composer, later joined by Tom Holkenborg, Steve Jablonsky, and Kevin Kiner. According to WindowsMyers2018, the score influenced Jablonsky's work for the Transformers films, Holkenborg's work for Zack Snyder's Justice League, Toprak's work for Stargirl, and Kiner's work for Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
