Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie – Part One is an upcoming Canadian computer-animated superhero comedy film developed by WindowsMyers2018 among several fanfic authors, and directed by Cal Brunker. Serving as a director's cut of PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, it is based on the children's television series PAW Patrol created by Keith Chapman and produced by Spin Master Entertainment. Callum Shoniker, Marsai Martin, Kim Kardashian, Gabrielle Union, Rob Lowe, Sam Witwer, Ron Pardo, and Dax Shepard reprise their voice roles from Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie, with Taraji P. Henson, Nylan Parthipan, Luxton Handspiker, Maya Rudolph, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Kim Roberts returning in additional roles. New voice cast members include Christian Convery, Mckenna Grace, Christian Corrao, Tom Cruise, Brie Larson, Paul Rudd, Jennifer Connelly, Michael Chiklis, Dwayne Johnson, Henry Cavill, Djimon Hounsou, Hailee Steinfeld, Snoop Dogg, Jack Black, James Marsden, Kristen Bell, and Finn Lee-Epp. The film also marks the final film appearance of Kevin Conroy following his death in 2022. In the film, Chase (Convery) recruits his adoptive family, the PAW Patrol, and the Council of the Super-Pups in order to save their world from Mayor Humdinger (Pardo) and Victoria Vance (Henson) before the supervillains try to steal the pups' crystals from a magical meteor.

A sequel for Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie was confirmed in November 2021. Brunker, Jennifer Dodge, and Bob Barlen were all set to return by the end of 2021. In 2022, Steinfeld, Dogg, and Kallan Holley, known for voicing Skye in seasons 1-5 of PAW Patrol, joined the voice cast as Sylvia, Snoop, and Daisy, respectively, with further casting in early-2023; Dogg also acts as an executive producer on Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie – Part One. WindowsMyers2018 said that the film drew inspiration from various superhero films such as Shazam! (2019) and Black Adam (2022).

Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie – Part One was released on Paramount+ on September 29, 2023, which is the same release date for the film's theatrical cut. Like its predecessor, the film received critical acclaim for the animation, voice acting, story, characterizations, musical score, action sequences, and emotional weight, though its short runtime was criticized. A direct sequel, entitled The Mighty Movie – Part Two, is in development.

Synopsis[]

When a meteor crash lands near Adventure City, it gives the PAW Patrol pups superpowers, transforming them into the Mighty Pups on the big screen! For Skye and Chase, their powers are a dream come true. But things take a turn for the worse when the pups' archrival, Mayor Humdinger, breaks out of jail, teaming up with meteor-obsessed mad scientist Victoria Vance to steal the superpowers. With the fate of Adventure City hanging in the balance, Chase and Skye enlist the help of their teammates and families, old and new, to stop the supervillains before it's too late, and Skye and Chase will need to learn that even the smallest pups can make the biggest difference.

Plot[]

In ancient Egypt, Anubis, a Bull Terrier puppy, is suddenly transported to Tartarus, a deep abyss located in another dimension. There, he meets Shazam, an ancient Great Dane who has searched for someone pure of heart to bestow his power and name as champion. Anubis is given the powers of Shazam, transforming him into the civilization's potential heroic champion. Tempted by Cronus, the king of the Titans, to use his powers for his own personal gain, he corrupts the gift and is banished across the universe as a result.

In the present day, after the battle of Adventure City,[1] meteor expert Victoria Vance and Bear, Vance's pet Tibetan Mastiff, steal a giant electromagnet from a scrapyard owned by Hank and Janet and sets the scrapyard ablaze. Ryder and the PAW Patrol pups—Chase, Skye, Rocky, Zuma, Marshall, Rubble, Liberty, Everest, and Tracker—extinguish the fire before it can spread. Though the rescue is successful, Everest feels like she has been unappreciated and hopes to prove herself.

Later that evening, the citizens of Adventure City and news reporter Sam Stringer gather outside the PAW Patrol's headquarters as they wait for a planetary alignment. Unbeknownst to them, the aligning of the planets allows Cronus to escape Tartarus and overpower Shazam. In an abandoned observatory, Vance uses the stolen electromagnet to create her meteor magnet. She uses it to snatch a magical meteor, but it backfires, causing the meteor to head straight for the city. Ryder and the PAW Patrol notice this and immediately warn the city's people before the meteor crash-lands, destroying their headquarters in the process. The PAW Patrol take the meteor to Camp PAW, a summer camp for pups and kittens with superpowers on Olympus, to analyze it.

That night, Skye is awoken by a strange glow emitting from the meteor. The meteor cracks open, revealing crystals contained inside. Shazam chooses Skye to be his new champion and, by saying his name, she, Chase, Zuma, Rubble, Rocky, and Marshall are transformed into the Mighty Pups, gained with superpowers from the crystals attached to their pup tags. While Skye and the Mighty Pups save Adventure City from various mishaps, Everest, Tracker, and Liberty are assigned by Ryder to look after the Junior Patrollers. They meet other Olympians who train them in the ways of fighting, including Hermes, Hera, Hercules, Athena, Persephone, Ares, Hephaestus, Zeus, and Poseidon.

Production[]

Development[]

In November 2017, Ronnen Harary confirmed that Spin Master was "currently considering whether to extend the PAW Patrol franchise into feature films at some point in the next 12 to 24 months". Animation tests were conducted in 2017 to measure how the characters "would translate onto the big screen" and the company developed a film script.

Pre-production[]

After PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie was greenlit by Paramount Pictures in November 2021, a director's cut for that film was in development, despite WindowsMyers2018's earlier claims that Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie was viewed as a series finale. The same attires from the TV special were confirmed for the Mighty Pups, different than the sub-series and the TV special.

Writing[]

In January 2023, Cal Brunker and Bob Barlen were confirmed to write the film's screenplay, with an original story by Chris Terrio, Zack Snyder, Andrew Guerdat, and Steven Sullivan. According to WindowsMyers2018, he drew inspiration from Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films' Shazam! (2019) and Black Adam (2022) for the portrayals of the addition of new Super-Pups. He later revealed that The Mighty Movie would have an equal focus on mythical and incarnated original characters, drawing inspiration from his favorite superhero films, including The Incredibles (2004), Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and Super Buddies (both 2013), Wonder Woman (2017), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), DC League of Super-Pets (2022), and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). He has also cited The Flash (2023), Max Fleischer's Superman cartoons, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Class of the Titans (2005-2008), and Secret Invasion (2023) as additional inspiration for The Mighty Movie.

After previously being marketed for Mighty Pups, Super Paws, Tracker makes his official first appearance in his Mighty Pups attire. The film was noted to explore Tracker learning how to control plant life to accelerate its growth. This film also marks the first time to feature several Mayor Goodway voice actresses since "Pups Save the Big Bad Bird Crew", an episode of the seventh season of PAW Patrol.

Casting[]

In November 2021, WindowsMyers2018 announced that Lilly Bartlam, Iain Armitage, Marsai Martin, Ron Pardo, Will Brisbin, Kingsley Marshall, Berkley Silverman, Callum Shoniker, Shayle Simons, Keegan Hedley, and Mateo Carnovale would headline the voice cast, and that Kallan Holley, who voiced Skye for five seasons of the show, would be featured in a cameo appearance; Holley was confirmed to voice Daisy, the sister of Skye, in June 2022. Daisy was named after the Whisker Haven character of the same name; in addition, Holley voiced Daisy in the Whisker Haven television series. In December 2021, Kahtryn Hahn was reported to voice Rosie, a mad scientist; Rosie was Liberty's original name in PAW Patrol: The Movie and was used for the name of Liberty's mother in Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie.

In early-2022, Kim Roberts was announced to voice Mayor Goodway, replacing Maya Rudolph from Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie, respectively, while Hailee Steinfeld was to voice a new character in the film; Steinfeld was announced to voice Sylvia, a German Shepherd who debuted in "Pups Save a Herd", a second season episode of the series, in October 2022. Taraji P. Henson, Katherine Forrester, Gabrielle Union, and Chris Pratt were also confirmed to reprise their vocal roles as Victoria Vance, Katie, Artemis and Apollo; Snoop Dogg was reported to voice an unidentified character (later revealed to be Snoop); and Jennifer Connelly and Tom Cruise were added as Penny and Maverick.

Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol The Mighty Movie voice cast

Top: Dwayne Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Tom Cruise, and Maya Rudolph provide the voices for Anubis, Sylvia, Maverick, and Athena, respectively.
Middle: Paul Rudd, Jennifer Connelly, Djimon Hounsou, and Henry Cavill provides the voices for Goose, Penny, Shazam, and Zeus, respectively.
Bottom: Snoop Dogg, Jack Black, and Zachary Levi provide the voices for Snoop, Bear, and Achilles, respectively, while Kevin Conroy appears in a posthumous cameo appearance as Ace. The Mighty Movie – Part One marks Conroy's final film role following his death in November 2022.

In January 2023, Jack Black was reported to appear in the film. On January 7, 2023, Dwayne Johnson was announced to appear in a "surprising cameo" according to WindowsMyers2018. Shortly after, Myers announced that Johnson would voice Anubis, and disclosed his favorite casting choices for the role of Apollo: Henry Cavill, who played Superman in the DC Extended Universe (2013-2022), and Zachary Levi, who played Shazam in Shazam (2019) and its then-upcoming sequel, Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023); Cavill and Levi ultimately got the roles of Zeus and Achilles. Rudolph entered negotiations to return from Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie, although she would not voice Mayor Goodway; Rudolph was revealed to be voicing Athena; Alan Kim, Brice Gonzalez, and North West were revealed to be voicing Nano, Tot, and Mini; Christian Corrao, Nylan Parthipan, Luxton Handspiker, Mckenna Grace, Christian Convery, and Finn Lee-Epp would replace Marshall, Simons, Hedley, Bartlam, Armitage, and Brisbin as Marshall, Zuma, Rubble, Skye, Chase, and Ryder, respectively; and Kristen Bell, Lil Rel Howery, James Marsden, Serena Williams, and Saint West were added in undisclosed voice roles. Before Parthipan and Handspiker's confirmed involvements, Jordan Mazeral and Lucien Duncan-Reid were set to voice Zuma and Rubble. Logan Nicholson was also reported to have replaced Shoniker for the role of Rocky. Conversely, Shoniker joined post-production and the rewrites, which meant there was potential for Shoniker to appear in the film as Rocky instead of Nicholson.

In February 2023, Tom Everett Scott, Molly Shannon, and Emily Mortimer were announced to voice Buddy, Molly, and Bloom, respectively; Scott and Shannon's performances reference their roles from Air Buddies (2006) and Snow Buddies (2008). In March 2023, Kaia Oz was revealed to voice Coral, reprising her role from the Aqua Pups sub-series of PAW Patrol; Djimon Hounsou was cast in the voice role of a dog counterpart of the wizard Shazam, reprising his role from the DC Extended Universe; Paul Rudd and Zarina Rocha were added to voice Skye's father (later revealed to be named Goose) and Cassandra; Black was confirmed to voice a Tibetan Mastiff named Bear; and Deann Degruijter, known for voicing Mayor Goodway in seasons 1-7 of PAW Patrol, was added to voice Roxy.

In April 2023, Brian Drummond, Corey Burton, and Jeff Bennett were cast as the voices of Hephaestus, Chase's adoptive uncle; Solomon, a Bullmastiff; and Mercury, a Bull Terrier with super-speed; Shohreh Aghdashloo and Sam Witwer were announced to reprise their roles as Hera and Hades; Chris Rock was confirmed to have a cameo appearance as a cat (later revealed to be named Ajax and Cat Rubble); and Kevin Conroy was posthumously added as Ace. In May 2023, Scott McNeil and Brian Dobson were added as the voices of Atlas and Hermes. In June 2023, Ian Ho was added as Moby, reprising his role from Aqua Pups, respectively. In July 2023, Sofia Boutella and Emily Thorne were confirmed to voice Bastet and Romeo.

In August 2023, Chris Diamantopoulos and Michael Chiklis were added as Hercules and Zeus, replacing planned appearances by Josh Keaton and Russell Crowe, while Crowe, Brie Larson, Nolan North, Ang Lee, and Kevin McKidd were added in minor roles as Saturn, Stella, Marcus, Hulk, and Poseidon, respectively. Shortly after, Dax Shepard and Tom Kenny were revealed to be reprising their roles as Ruben and Frank.

In September 2023, Rosario Dawson and Pierce Brosnan were added as Persephone and Chiron; Dawson and Brosnan previously played different iterations in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010). Also in September, the role of Apollo was recast with Rob Lowe replacing Pratt, and Mary Gibbs was featured as toddler Skye via recycled audio from Monsters, Inc. (2001).

Animation[]

Like it's predecessor, Paramount Animation, Sony Pictures Animation, Guru Studio, and Mikros Image worked on the animation of the film.

Post-production[]

Before the film's premiere, Margot Robbie was reported to voice the Maltese named Twiggy. Though, according to Some Wandom Noob, it was reported that it was changed during the script to a trickster and the article relied on outdated info. SWN also stated that Twiggy wouldn't play an important role in the movie. Despite speculation that Robbie would appear, WindowsMyers2018 initially confirmed that she would not appear in the film to avoid interference with the film's narrative, but agreed to reduce Twiggy's role, retaining Robbie in a minor role.

Christian Convery, Jacob Tremblay, Izaac Wang, Kathryn Hahn, Dee Bradley Baker, Queen Latifah, Jake Johnson, Paul Nakauchi, and Shameik Moore were to voice Mini, Nano, Tot, Olivia, Oceanus, Ellie, Hercules, and Apollo, and Yara Shahidi and Jimmy Kimmel were expected to reprise their respective roles as Kendra Wilson and Marty Muckraker from the first film, but Myers felt that including too many characters would negatively affect the story. Some of the planned cameos that did not make the final cut included Katie, Coral, Moby, McSquidly (voiced by Julie Lemieux), Al, Rex, Mr. Porter, Alex Porter, Danny, Ms. Marjorie, the Penguin King (voiced by Khary Payton, reprising his role from The Super Mario Bros. Movie), Hippolyta (voiced by Cree Summer), the Princess of Barkingburg (reprised by Caoimhe Judd), Sweetie (reprised by Anya Cooke), Harris (reprised by Charlie Gallant), Apollo the Super-Pup (reprised by Lyon Smith), Luna (reprised by Linda Ballantyne), Blaze (voiced by Nolan North), Finn (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson), Tino (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad), Aphrodite (voiced by Tabitha St. Germain), Ares (voiced by Garry Chalk), Eros (voiced by Micah Abbey), and Cronus (voiced by David Kaye). Burton's role as Solomon was initially removed, but retained following restructuring for the writing process. Addison Holley was reported to replace Forrester as Katie, respectively, with Holley's role decided to excess in the latest cut. In September 2023, Ron Pardo as Cap'n Turbot, which was previously surveyed to have been deleted, was reinserted.

One of the film's early drafts included the concept of a multiverse within the PAW Patrol universe. As such, alternate variants of Chase and Skye were set to appear, voiced by Convery and Grace. The multiverse's dimensions would have included Earth-23 (home of the Council of the Super-Pups and the alternate Chase and Skye) and Earth-13 (the mainstream universe of the PAW Patrol franchise). Myers was considering the following options: if the multiverse subplot was retained, The Mighty Movie would reboot the PAW Patrol franchise as a whole; if the multiverse subplot was cut from the final version, The Mighty Movie would continue the storyline that was first introduced in Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie. SWN referred to Earth-13 and Earth-23 as "the main timeline" and "the Super-Pups timeline". In August 2023, the multiverse subplot was reportedly removed from the latest cut.

This film was originally assumed to be released as one and titled Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, based on what the previous film entry was called. However, due to its long runtime, The Mighty Movie was divided into two parts. In June 2023, this film was later re-titled to Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie – Part One. In support of a director's cut release of The Mighty Movie were Kim Roberts, Mary Gibbs, Luke Dietz, Alan Kim, and PAW Patrol songwriter Scott Simons.

The post-credits scene is a scene from The Mighty Movie – Part Two, with Tom Hiddleston and Ben Schwartz voicing Loki and Apollo.
