~ Artemis and Apollo to Chase. |
Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie (colloquially referred to as the Brunker Cut) is the 2023 director's cut of the Canadian-American computer-animated adventure comedy film PAW Patrol: The Movie, the first of several planned films produced under the banner of Spin Master Entertainment, the toy company behind the series. It is developed by WindowsMyers2018 among several fanfic writers, and directed by Cal Brunker, from a screenplay by Brunker, Bob Barlen, and Billy Frolick, with a story by Frolick, Sam Raimi, Zack Snyder, and PAW Patrol creator Keith Chapman. It is intended to match an original vision of PAW Patrol: The Movie before overall script rewrites and other changes. The film follows the PAW Patrol—Ryder (Will Brisbin), Chase (Iain Armitage), Marshall (Kingsley Marshall), Rubble (Keegan Hedley), Rocky (Callum Shoniker), Zuma (Shayle Simons), Skye (Lilly Bartlam), Everest (Berkley Silverman), Tracker (Mateo Carnovale), Sweetie (Anya Cooke), Robo-Dog (Rob Tinkler), Liberty (Marsai Martin), Delores (Kim Kardashian), Artemis (Gabrielle Union), and Apollo (Rob Lowe)—as they save Adventure City from the recently-elected Mayor Humdinger (Ron Pardo) from turning the bustling metropolis into a state of chaos for the Duke of Flappington (Ashton Frank).
Development began after PAW Patrol premiered in 2013. The divisive reception of the theatrical version led to fans of the show expressing interest in a director's cut of PAW Patrol: The Movie, which is often referred to as the "Brunker Cut". Jim Gaffigan and Maya Rudolph signed on to voice Digger and Mayor Goodway, and act as an executive producer in October 2020. Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies moved ahead with the project in October 2020; the film was announced to be initially released as PAW Patrol: The Movie (2020 Director's Cut), and then Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie as a Paramount+ Original Film. Production was done remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. On a budget of $52 million, new material was developed to complete the animation, editing, and soundtrack. In April 2023, a campaign to increase the #ReleaseTheBrunkerCut movement and a multi-animator project were announced. The film was dedicated to the memory of PAW Patrol director Charles E. Bastien.
Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie was distributed by Paramount Pictures, and produced by Nickelodeon Movies, Columbia Pictures, and Spin Master Entertainment, with animation provided by Guru Studio and Mikros Image. An original workprint was released on Paramount+ in the United States on November 3, 2021, while a final cut was expected to be released between 2022 and 2023. The film is intended to launch the PAW Patrol Cinematic Universe, with two sequels planned and the spin-off series PAW Patrol: Rescue Pups in development for Paramount+.
Plot
Rottweiler twins named Apollo and Artemis raise a young German Shepherd puppy, Chase, in Adventure City, bringing him to the Lookout in Adventure Bay. Richard, the CEO of the PAW Patrol Rescue Foundation, invents microchips that give dogs their human-based voices. Humdinger Industries' businessman, Mayor Humdinger, expands the human-voiced chips for all pets owned by Adventure Bay and Adventure City, leaving Richard and Kendra Wilson to build vehicles for dogs. Richard and Mary say goodbye to their son, Ryder, then mysteriously leave. Humdinger rigs an election to be inaugurated as mayor of Adventure City, becoming the ballot's only candidate and defeating the opposing incumbent, Mayor Madison.
In the present day, a truck driver named Gus crashes and hangs over Adventure Bay's bridge. Cap'n Turbot comes across the scene and calls the PAW Patrol to save Gus. Over time, Ryder, Marshall, Rubble, Chase, Rocky, Zuma, Skye, Everest, and Tracker continue defending Adventure Bay and Barkingburg. Eventually, a dachshund named Liberty alerts them through Richard's Pup-Pad that their arch-nemesis, Humdinger, has just become mayor in nearby Adventure City. Chase initially refuses to go, due to PTSD from the city when he was younger, but reluctantly agrees to go after Ryder says everything will be fine. Before the team leaves, Everest reveals to Marshall that she and Gasket were raised in the South Pole and doesn't believe Gasket will have a change of heart because of her bad antics, but Marshall then encourages her to give Gasket a chance.
As Ryder and the pups are settling into their new headquarters, Humdinger recruits the Duke of Flappington to use his levitation gem in overheating the "Cloud Catcher", a device designed by Kendra to collect clouds for research, and trigger a cataclysmic storm. On a rainy day, Humdinger goes to a meteorology laboratory and insists on testing out the Cloud Catcher. That night, Humdinger is giving a fireworks display to celebrate his election, but the show goes awry and Ryder and the pups suit up to respond with the help of Liberty.
During the response, Chase sees some citizens trapped on a balcony and parachutes down to rescue them, but he forgets to take off his parachute and gets blown over the railing by a wind gust, causing him to feel worthless. The next day, Chase informs Rocky and Zuma about his wish to impress Ryder. They decide to help Chase be brave, but while doing so, they encounter a skunk that sprays Chase with its fumes. Butch and Ruben, hearing the commotion, investigate; they pursue Rocky and Chase through the park until Chase leaps over a large ravine to safety. Ryder, Artemis, and Apollo, having seen the whole thing, are impressed.
Meanwhile, Sweetie debates whether she is on the wrong side. Cat Marshall and Cat Zuma overhear her potential betrayal and leave to inform Humdinger. He orders Sweetie to attack Chase in disbanding the PAW Patrol and unveils a loop-de-loop extension he has designed for a subway train, which breaks down and leaves the train trapped at the top of the last loop. While trying to stop the train from falling, Ryder sends Chase up to a rooftop to zip-line to the train cars so the passengers can be saved, but he ends up freezing due to a fear of heights, and the other pups have to rescue the passengers instead.
After the rescue is finished, Ryder advises Chase to take a break, but Chase accuses him and Zuma of breaking his trust and runs away, only to be captured alongside Sweetie by Humdinger's henchmen, Butch and Ruben, and taken to an obedience school which Humdinger has turned into a dog pound. Saddened, Sweetie realizes that Humdinger and the Duke had double-crossed her. To help save Chase and Sweetie, Liberty deliberately gets herself captured by knocking over a stage piece during a live interview of Humdinger. She is taken to the pound, while Ryder, Mayor Goodway, the Princess of Barkingburg, and the PAW Patrol pups follow, allowing Rubble and his father, Digger, to break into the pound and set the other dogs free. As the other pups return to Adventure City HQ, Artemis, Apollo, and Skye take Chase to an intersection where Artemis and Apollo had found him many years earlier and explain to Chase that they adopted him because they saw he was a fighter. Chase agrees that he will resume his duties, gaining a new black police uniform.
Later, Skye forgives Sweetie for her past actions after learning she was redeemed by Chase and Liberty. Chase reconciles with Ryder and Zuma, agreeing they can resume their friendship. Humdinger reveals an extension he has added to the city's tallest skyscraper, putting his office at the very top, but at that moment, the Cloud Catcher goes critical, having not been designed to run nonstop or be used for controlling weather, and begins leaking clouds with weeks worth of nasty weather, placing a massive hurricane-strength storm over all of Adventure City. Kendra contacts the PAW Patrol and they respond in a flash, with Ryder making Liberty an official member.
As the pups and Mayor Goodway help the citizens take cover, Liberty and Zuma race to the canals to rescue Arrby and Sid Swashbuckle, and Ryder and the Princess ascend to Humdinger's office, convincing him to evacuate by getting on the elevator. Ryder manually releases the elevator cables to quickly lower Humdinger to the ground, and then starts rappelling down the shaft, but the tower gets blown over sideways, Ryder gets trapped, and Artemis is wounded by a debris of the tower. The Princess falls from the tower, but is ultimately saved by Sweetie. Chase, having seen the tower fall, rushes to rescue Ryder by using suction-cupped tires on his car's detachable motorcycle to ride straight up the side of the windows.
Upon seeing the glow from a light on Ryder's suit, Chase rushes to a gap where the tower has split. He becomes worried about getting across, but then remembering Apollo's words about his courage, Chase leaps across the gap. He helps Ryder get unstuck and they escape the building while Skye uses a kamikaze-style attack to sacrifice her helicopter and destroy the Cloud Catcher. As the weather is cleared and sunny again, Chase arrests Humdinger for endangering the city and dognapping, getting him removed from office. Artemis is taken to a hospital, with Kendra telling the team of her recovering condition.
Mayor Madison is reelected mayor of Adventure City, the PAW Patrol is given the city's key, and Ryder gives Liberty her own pup-tag to make her an official member. Robo-Dog temporarily regains his voice before the pups are called out for a rescue by Harris, one of the dogs from the pound. Artemis and Apollo stay behind, and while recovering from her wounds, Artemis notices her paws glowing, realizing that she has superpowers. The Mighty Twins—Tuck and Ella—receive a visit from Katie, who promises to be in contact with the PAW Patrol to prepare for Humdinger's return.

History
Development
In 2014, WindowsMyers2018 developed his idea of a PAW Patrol film adaptation. He also expressed interest in Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, and Columbia Pictures distributing the film. After Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie was greenlit in October 2020, Myers revealed that Owen Mason, Tristan Samuel, Stuart Ralston, Kallan Holley, Alex Thorne, Gage Munroe, Devan Cohen, Christian Distefano, and Deann Degruijter would have reprised their roles as Ryder, Chase, Rocky, Skye, Zuma, Marshall, Rubble, Alex Porter, and Mayor Goodway. In 2016, "Air Pups" was released, as part of the third season of PAW Patrol. Myers said elements of "Air Pups" would have been utilized in a newly written script for his PAW Patrol film adaptation. The project was eventually cancelled, ending up in a production hiatus for four years.
In November 2017, Ronnen Harary confirmed that Spin Master was "currently considering whether to extend the PAW Patrol franchise into feature films at some point in the next 12 to 24 months." Animation tests were conducted in 2017 to measure how the characters "would translate onto the big screen" and the company developed a film script. In October 2020, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies moved ahead with a director's cut of PAW Patrol: The Movie (2020), with Cal Brunker and Spin Master Entertainment president Jennifer Dodge attached as director and producer. Production was done via telecommuting. In March 2021, an official poster was released to promote the film's exclusive teaser during the 2021 Kids' Choice Awards. In March 2022, WindowsMyers2018 described Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie as "the PAW Patrol vision of Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)". Unlike the theatrical release of PAW Patrol: The Movie, the Brunker Cut received a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association, leading to it being the first PAW Patrol film with a PG rating. Myers initially opined that a PG rating could have hurt test screenings potential by preventing young audiences from seeing it, noting that Brunker's previous PG rated films, Escape from Planet Earth (2013) and The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature (2017), both underperformed critically and commercially, but later added that despite the film's mild violence, Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie would retain as family-friendly.
The scenes of Chase rescuing Gus and Ryder were the first scenes Myers worked on for sound design, and he used sound effects from the Transformers film series as the basis for how the shields for Chase's police cruiser car deploy and retract. The name of the girl who owns Precious was revealed to be "Claudia", respectively, and full names for Katie and The Cheetah were originally revealed to be "Katie Forrester" and "Kelsey Humdinger". Jim was to play a role similar to the conductor (played by Tom Hanks) in The Polar Express (2004), the final battle was to be based on the Battle of Earth in Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Cap'n Turbot and Francois were to serve as hosts, interrupting the film at certain points to explain things to the audience, which was inspired by Bert and Ernie's scenes in The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (1999); the Jim Gaffigan-themed script was rejected. Though an early draft featured Mayor Humdinger and the Duke of Flappington clearly dying, they were selected to stay alive during the script's rewrites, thus another change incorporated a brighter amid more dramatic tone.[1]
An original conceived variation of the final scene included characters such as Chickaletta, Katie, Tuck, and Ella. Chickaletta originally played a role of warning Ryder about Mayor Humdinger's plan of revenge, with Elisha Cuthbert cast for the role before the character's lines were cut from the final film; Myers said that Chickaletta would have spoken in later films. The scene was reanimated to only include Katie speaking with Tuck and Ella. Myers was unsure if the appearances of Tuck, Ella, and Rex would be kept in the theatrical release, or if their actors-Eamon Hanson, Isabella Leo, and Luxton Handspiker-voicing them would be able to reprise their roles in the future. Consequently, he felt the script would only focus on the original six pups, Everest, Tracker, Liberty, and Sweetie. Ultimately, he wanted to "make better use" for the prior threesome, prepending Tuck and Ella in the film's epilogue for a teaser of Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie; and Rex's capacity was reduced to a minor role.
Pre-production
Casting
In October 2020, Jim Gaffigan was contacted by Nickelodeon about voicing characters in multiple PAW Patrol projects starting with an appearance as Digger in the original vision of the first film.[2] Gaffigan was the first actor to join Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie, having been previously featured as an animated PAW Patrol pup of himself in a 30-second animated short used to promote The Jim Gaffigan Show's second season.[3] Drew Davis was previously considered to return as Marshall in October 2020, previously voicing the character in the show's second, third, fourth, and fifth seasons, but was replaced with Kingsley Marshall. Also in October, Berkley Silverman was set to return as Everest and Maya Rudolph was cast to voice Mayor Goodway, replacing Degruijter and Kim Roberts; Roberts voiced Rachel instead and filled in as an understudy for the role of Mayor Goodway.[4] In November 2020, Katie Couric was reportedly set to voice Hailey Daily, a character who debuted in "Mighty Pups, Charged Up: Pups vs. the Copycat"; Margarita Valderrama, however, was set to return from Mighty Pups.[5] Gabrielle Union, Tom Kane, Rob Rackstraw, Lorelei King, Haley Tju, André Sogliuzzo, Adam Alexi-Malle, Ian James Corlett, Ron Rubin, Teresa Gallagher, Kathleen Barr, Liam Gerrard, Morwenna Banks, Lily James, Sandra Lee, Jamiyka Jones, Raoul Bhaneja, Rosa Laborde, Saara Chaudry, Stacey DePass, Matthew Broderick, Brad Pitt, Tom Hardy, Ken Jeong, Ice-T, and The Muppets cast member David Rudman were eyed for supporting roles. Due to a forced retirement in the wake of his stroke in November 2020, Kane was dropped out of the project. In December 2020, Matthew Mucci was announced to voice Wild Cat, replacing Tristan Mammitzich, respectively. Conversely, Meesha Contreras, voice of Arrby, would replace Mammitzich as Wild, before Beckett Hipkiss, the voice of Ryder in the television series' eighth season, was circled for the role.
In 2021, Munroe, Downey Jr., Olson, Middleditch, Moynihan, and Smith were set to voice the pups as adults for cameo appearances and Carnovale was cast as Tracker, ahead of replacing David Lopez for the show's eighth season; Lopez and Armitage were considered for the role of Tracker in October 2020, but lost to Carnovale.[6] Sandy Fox and Bradley Cooper initially entered negotiations to voice Julius Goodway and Rocket, but were replaced with Justice James and Richard Binsley, respectively. Matthew Campbell, who was added for the theatrical release's dub in the United Kingdom as Chase, got the role of the Prince of Barkingburg, but did not appear; Campbell eventually voiced the Prince of Barkingburg in Cal Brunker's All Paws on Deck, the third installment of a planned PAW Patrol movie trilogy. In May 2022, Taraji P. Henson was reported to voice Victoria Vance for the epilogue following her casting involvement in PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie. WindowsMyers2018 reported before that Kathryn Hahn was cast as Rosie, who was the original mad scientist; Hahn's cameo was cut, and Myers revealed that it was why Henson joined the film's post-production.[7] Eventually, Henson was recast as Rosie, the mother of Liberty; Rosie was Liberty's original name, shown in the theatrical movie's storyboards.
Originally, Vanessa Redgrave and Sharon Miller were to cameo as the late Queen Elizabeth II, but was deleted after Thomas and the Royal Engine (in which Miller voiced the Queen since then) became controversial for its Prince Harry sequence. In a deleted scene, Brianna Gentilella and Tom Kenny were to cameo as Molly and SpongeBob SquarePants, reprising their vocal roles from the Bubble Guppies and SpongeBob SquarePants franchises.[8]
In March 2023, Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean was added to the voice cast in an undisclosed voice role; McLean was reported to voice Frank, a Pug.[9] Myers noted that he was unaware of McLean's involvement with the marketing of PAW Patrol: The Movie and that McLean's daughter was a fan of the show. Keating was also added to voice Earl, the father of Sweetie. Myers unveiled original plans for cameo appearances in the dog pound: Tim Blaney as Frank (in an Easter egg appearance, Blaney would have reprised his voice role from the Men in Black franchise), Nolan North as Blaze, Jeff Goldblum as Dingo, Kevin Michael Richardson as Bruce and Finn, Nat Faxon as Buddy, Tobey Maguire as Al, and Alec Baldwin as Garry. Although none were reported to appear in the final product, Myers stated that he was interested in retaining select original Brunker Cut workprint cast members for installments of the then-upcoming PAW Patrol Cinematic Universe. In September 2023, Lowe was cast as Apollo, replacing a planned appearance by Chris Pratt; according to Myers, Apollo was to be based on Pratt's famous roles of Emmet Brickowski in The Lego Movie (2014) and Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In April 2024, Luxton Handspiker was cast as Cameron, playing the role as the same character in PJ Masks. In July 2024, Renée Elise Goldsberry was added as Rosie.
When acknowledging the theatrical cut's mixed reception, Myers defended Brunker's casting choices; he lauded Armitage's performance for embracing the sensation of Chase's tone, while lauding Shoniker's voice of Rocky as "suitable for everyone's favorite recycling pup". Myers initially felt debatable about his casting choice of Rudolph as Mayor Goodway due to his unawareness of Roberts voicing the character at the time, but found Rudolph and Roberts likable to make their chemistry between Mayor Goodway and Rachel realistic; he further stated that Rudolph's performance was to impersonate Degruijter. Michael Donovan and Stephany Seki, voice of Farmer Yumi, served as the film's voice directors.
Writing
In October 2020, Bob Barlen announced that he would co-write the screenplay with director Cal Brunker, PAW Patrol creator Keith Chapman, Billy Frolick, Sam Raimi, and Zack Snyder. Bryn McAuley (who performed as Ladybird and the mer-pups) acknowledged Brunker, saying, "Cal is so incredibly talented!"[10] Myers stated that the film would explore Ryder and the pups defending Adventure City as adolescents. Before the entire plot retained the storyline from the theatrical version of PAW Patrol: The Movie, early scripts for the film involved Chase, Skye, Marshall, Rubble, Rocky, and Zuma joining Jim on a travelling show, whilst Ryder would assist Tracker and Everest to rescue them. When Mayor Humdinger would assemble the PAW Patrol's enemies as the Legion of Foggy Bottom, Skye would have been injured and Ryder would have been kidnapped by the Duke of Flappington, leaving the pups and their allies to restore Adventure Bay to its former glory.[11]
Chapman's original pitch for PAW Patrol focused on the idea that the six PAW Patrol dogs were rescued by Ryder before joining the team. While the rescued dog theme was abandoned in 2012, Myers noted that Chapman's storyline would be featured in the Brunker Cut. He also confirmed that all unused storyboards from the theatrical cut, including Chase's nightmare of his fears in Adventure City, would also be recreated in animation. According to Brunker, Chase's nightmare made it past the storyboard stage for the theatrical release, but was cut due to the audience understanding his fears well enough. Unused voice clips and cut lines from the theatrical cut's marketing and shown in the read-along storybook were also restored. While working on the film's script and a planned shared universe based on PAW Patrol, Myers acknowledged a statement regarding his determination to listen to the show's fans: "Recently, I heard what PAW Patrol has been criticized or declining for some time, so I listened to and understood some of the fans' reasonings. Listening to the fans and their opinions of how the PAW Patrol franchise has been lately, this helped increase my development for characters (particularly Ryder, Chase, and Zuma) and the quality of my first film's director's cut compared to the show's newest episodes."
Many elements of Air Pups, Mission PAW, Sea Patrol, Ultimate Rescue, Moto Pups, Rescue Knights, Mighty Pups, Ready Race Rescue, and Jet to the Rescue were incorporated to some extent into the depiction of PAW Patrol in the Brunker Cut, such as a dog (particularly Artemis) gaining superpowers, a race between the Cheetah and the Whoosh, Sweetie's redemption after a villain (that being Mayor Humdinger and the Duke of Flappington) betrays her, and Ryder saving Humdinger regardless of their differences. PAW Patrol directors Jamie Whitney and Charles E. Bastien were story consultants on the film.
In portraying the PAW Patrol for a new script, Myers wanted to focus on Chase earlier in his career, showing more of his emotional side and redeeming himself from hurting the feelings of one of his friends (that being Zuma and Ryder); because he listened to Hans Zimmer's "Flight" from Man of Steel (2013), he decided to base Chase on Snyder's interpretation of Superman (played by Henry Cavill) and the character's portrayal in DC Comics' The Death and Return of Superman storyline. He also took inspiration of the final act of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) for the exploration of Ryder's transition from giving orders without letting the pups decide by themselves to inspiring hope. Myers looked up to make Zuma relatable while honoring what people love about him, and described his take on Zuma as "worrying he won't measure up for Ryder. He learns the communications of sea creatures, understanding the real purpose of saving their habitats". He also reclassified Rocky's dog breed as a Tamaskan Dog, paying tribute to "Pups and the Werepuppy", an episode of the show's fifth season. Mason was introduced as Rubble's caretaker, retconning "Pups Get a Rubble", an episode of the show's first season.
Artemis, Apollo, and Esadowa's characterizations combine elements from Union, Lowe, and Shohreh Aghdashloo's previous vocal performances as Nala, Simba, and Queen Janna in Disney Junior's television series The Lion Guard (2015-2019). Artemis and Apollo were named after the Olympian deities with the same names, using Greek mythology and developed concepts from Percy Jackson & the Olympians. The friendly side of Arrby drew from the Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go interpretation of Thomas the Tank Engine, who was also voiced by Contreras. Unlike the show, Mr. Porter is portrayed as Alex's father, rather than his grandfather. The Legion of Foggy Bottom was based on the Sinister Six, an organization of villains appearing in the Spider-Man comics; according to Myers, the Duke of Flappington referenced Green Goblin.
Themes and inspirations
Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie invokes themes of coming of age, family, friendship, good vs. evil, hope, justice, love, and redemption. Unlike previous PAW Patrol episodes, the Brunker Cut focuses on morals for each member of the team. Myers looked to his favorite films for inspiration, including The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, Spider-Man (2002), Bambi II (2006), The Amazing Spider-Man and Treasure Buddies (both 2012), The Lego Movie, Zack Snyder's Justice League, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), as well as Bigfoot Presents: Meteor and the Mighty Monster Trucks, Bluey, The Lion Guard, Thomas & Friends (1984-2021), and Rescue Heroes (1999-2002).
The relationship between Ben Affleck's Batman and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder's Justice League inspired the dynamic between Chase and Skye. To convey Ryder's insecurity, Myers added a scene, inspired by the Martian Manhunter (played by Harry Lennix) meeting Batman, featuring him visited and comforted by Katie to prepare training their pups for a bigger mission. In addition, the Brunker Cut also depicts Rocky with newfound resolve and optimism for Zuma and the employed importance of water, unlike his fear of water in the show; Tracker has a like for ancient jungle curses, encouraging Carlos to overcome them; Rubble mentions his like for the superhero dog, Apollo, bonding with Chase's adoptive father of the same name; and Marshall shares liver-flavored kibbles with Everest, restoring her love for liver from the second season episode "The New Pup". A scene where Robo-Dog speaks during the ceremony is a reference to Transformers where Bumblebee's voice returns following the battle of Mission City.
Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie also had numerous Go, Dog. Go! references as a nod that Rocky was voiced by Shoniker, who voiced Scooch Pooch. The first Go, Dog. Go! reference is when Rocky and Scooch Pooch both own a chicken toy named Cluckles. The second reference is Zuma helping Rocky herd Farmer Al's sheep, sampled from Tag helping Scooch Pooch bake dog cupcakes in "Pupcakes". The third reference is when the song "It's Your Clucky Day" from "Clucky Day" plays during the Adventure Bay Hoedown. The fourth and final reference is when Rocky and Zuma help Chase be brave, in which they bounce across a pond on bouncy balls, inspired by "A Ball for All".
Post-production
An early treatment showed a 214 minute cut, with Sparks recolored to match the appearance of the Ender Dragon from Minecraft and speaking in a similar voice to the Cave of Wonders from Aladdin (1992) and its 2019 live-action remake, provided by Frank Welker. Myers described it as rough, saying, "I felt unsure if the cut lived up to its full narrative. There was so much more yet to come". Later treatments showed a cut, with Henson included in one. Myers wanted to keep the teaser for The Mighty Movie—in which Victoria Vance befriends Mayor Humdinger—because he felt it embraced and heightened Artemis and Apollo's final conversation. The final cut runs at 172 minutes, surpassing the extended version of In This Corner of the World (2016) by 4 minutes to briefly become the longest animated film to date and surpassing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) by 32 minutes to become the longest animated film ever produced by an American studio until it was later surpassed by Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie.
In March 2023, Myers announced the full screenplay of Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie would be completed by mid-2023, noting that Rocky, Zuma, Everest, and Tracker's roles in the script were "very large". He also reported that Megan Fahlenbock and Anthony Sardinha were set to voice Ace Sorensen and Traveling Travis in cameo appearances, with Fahlenbock entering negotiations since October 2020, and that Tyler Perry was set to voice a calico cat counterpart of Madea; Perry's cameo as Madea would have almost been prevented by a copyright conflict between Lionsgate and Paramount Pictures. He added that some elements were dropped to avoid interference with the film's narrative; an early draft of the rescue of Gus involved Rex being given back leg braces from Ryder for helping Al pull Gus' truck up, referencing Tony Stark/Iron Man designing bionic supports for James Rhodes/War Machine in Captain America: Civil War (2016). Fahlenbock and Sardinha's cameos, along with ones Jayne Eastwood, Temapare Hodson, and Dwayne Hill had voiced as Helga Humdinger, Hurricane Harrigan, and Cletus, were soon reported to have been cut. Several voice actors who were reported to be reprising their roles from PAW Patrol in Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie did not end up doing so, including McAuley as Ladybird, Lyon Smith as Luke Stars, and Quancetia Hamilton as The Great Wendini. Myers later revealed that Sarah Gadon would voice a subway passenger named Samantha; Samantha was originally written to be a gold digger who formerly owned Chase. Gadon's character was redeveloped to have a relationship with Rosie, being renamed Dory, and replacing a planned appearance by Jennifer Hale. Shortly after, Bastien passed away from a battle with cancer. Myers affirmed that though he felt "shocked and heartbroken" after Guru Studio broke the story, the film would dedicate Bastien's memory and honor his legacy.
In April 2023, Myers confirmed that Cathal J. Dodd would reprise his voice role as Ron Rapidfire from Ready Race Rescue, replacing a planned appearance by NASCAR announcer Mike Joy; archive audio of Joy's reactions to crashes in NASCAR events would have been used for his portrayal of Rapidfire, respectively.[12] He added that several drivers and other racing-related personalities from NASCAR had their cameo appearances removed from the final cut, including Ryan Newman as Willy Widewheels Jr., Ryan Blaney as Lionel Lightspeed, and Hailie Deegan as Riff Rockenbock.[13] The following month, Myers confirmed that Ryan Reynolds would voice Bruce; Reynolds was previously cast as Timber, a Saint Bernard who was to be Everest and Gasket's adoptive father. Timber's scenes were removed after Myers felt there were too many characters involved with the film, but expressed interest to have Timber return in a future project, that being The Mighty Movie. Timber was replaced with Gasket's father who adopts Everest.[14] James Marsden was also reported to return from The Mighty Movie, with his role decided to retain following the release of that film's trailer. A teaser trailer for PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie was included at the end of the film as a post-credits scene, after being released online in June 2023, while Myers confirmed his casting choice of Russell Crowe as Zeus.[15][16] Conversely, in July 2023, Barr and Kenny were set to voice Athena and Frank. By then, Crowe and McLean were not included in the latest cut of the film, as Myers did not want to overburden its excessive casting of high-budget A-list actors; Crowe was later recast as Saturn in The Mighty Movie. In August 2023, Marsden's appearance was reportedly removed from the latest cut.
Juan Chioran reprises his role as Raimundo from PAW Patrol during the film's epilogue; this marks his first time voicing the character since "Pups Save Daring Danny's Hippo". The film also marked Ron Pardo's final performance as Gustavo Goodway before Deven Mack was announced to succeed Pardo in the role.
Animation
Guru Studio and Mikros Image worked on the animation of the film. Guru Studio worked on the animation for the sequences in Adventure Bay, while Mikros Image worked on the Adventure City fight scenes. Inspiration for the design of the film came from the theatrical release and Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), although the Brunker Cut also retains a lower budget scaled animation style used in the show. Additional inspiration for the animation came from the filmmaking style of Zack Snyder and Michael Bay, particularly shown in the DC Extended Universe and Transformers film series.
For designing the film's new characters (particularly Bruce, Al, and Dory), live-action photographs of dogs were employed with animated body features. Models of Rocket, and Harris were recolored for creating Dingo, Artemis, and Apollo, respectively. Footage from Bob the Builder: Mega Machines and The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature (both 2017, the latter directed and written by Brunker) was reused for the sequences of the Princess and Sweetie's arrival in Adventure City and the dam burst; as a result, Mattel and Open Road Films were listed in the "special thanks" catalog of the credits.
In November 2023, WindowsMyers2018 unveiled that Clipping Magic, Google Slides, and Wondershare Filmora were used for working on the film's artwork.
#ReleaseTheBrunkerCut movement
In April 2023, Myers unveiled a campaign to increase the #ReleaseTheBrunkerCut movement, with an estimated goal to reach over 10,000 posts online. He also announced that a multi-animator project could be released, creating 2D animation in the style of animated films by Walt Disney Pictures.[17] In June 2023, Myers started an online petition for the film's release on Change.org.[18][19]
Members of the PAW Patrol: The Movie and PAW Patrol cast and crew showing support for the Brunker Cut's release included actors Roberts,[20][21][22][23] Judd,[24][25][26] Cooke,[27][28][29] Brisbin,[30][31][32] Jarsky,[33][34] Webster,[35] McAuley,[36] Pardo,[37] Shoniker,[38] Tafari,[39] Ross,[40] Gallant,[41] Rakusen,[42] Abbott,[43] Pingue,[44] Braunstein,[45] Vandervaart,[46] Cho,[47] Tinkler,[48] Bhaneja,[49] Julie-Ann Dean,[50] and composer Heitor Pereira.[51] Other film and television industry figures not related to PAW Patrol: The Movie also supported the release of a "Brunker Cut", including actors Samuel Vincent,[52][53] Linda Ballantyne,[54] Vincent Tong,[55] Sandy Fox,[56] Mikayla SwamiNathan,[57] Alan Kim,[58] Remi Tuckman,[59] Lithuanian singer Simonna,[60] and former Netflix Films chairman Scott Stuber.[61]
Follow-up movements
Fans advocated additional movements, #JusticeForZuma, #JusticeForEverest, #JusticeForTracker, #JusticeForRoboDog, and #StopNeglectingMarshall, for Spin Master Entertainment to ameliorate Zuma, Everest, Tracker, Robo-Dog, and Marshall's enactments in the show.
Differences from the theatrical version
- Main article: List of changes in Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie
While the basic framework of the story from the 2021 final cut is the same, numerous scenes are included to expand upon the characters, mythos, and worldbuilding elements.
Myers stated that the Brunker Cut is set in the same continuity as PAW Patrol, taking place during the events of the show's eighth season and Jet to the Rescue. The newer version of the PAW Patroller replaced the original, so it wouldn't retcon the theatrical cut.
Music
- Main article: Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie/Soundtrack
In October 2020, Danny Elfman was announced to write the film's opening themes. Pereira, John Debney, Michael Giacchino, Steve Jablonsky, Harry Gregson-Williams, and Hans Zimmer were later hired to compose the leading score. WindowsMyers2018 claimed that the most memorable pieces from the film's music were created by several composers, including elements of Ang Lee's Hulk (2003), and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), all of which were composed by Elfman; The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), PAW Patrol: The Movie, and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) by Pereira; Up (2009), Jurassic World (2015), Star Trek Beyond (2016), Spider-Man: No Way Home, and The Batman (2022) by Giacchino; Cutthroat Island (1995), The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015), and Luck (2022) by Debney; The Lion King (1994), Man of Steel, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) by Zimmer; Shrek (2001), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), and Polar Bear (2022) by Gregson-Williams; the Transformers film series by Jablonsky; and Jumanji (1995), Titanic (1997), and The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) by the late James Horner. Voodoo Highway Music & Post Inc. conducted and orchestrated the sessions for "PAW Patrol on a Roll", "Good Pup", "Pup Pup Boogie", and the PAW Patrol theme song, alongside its "Jet to the Rescue", "Ready Race Rescue", and "Mighty Pups" variants, all performed by Scott Simons and the cast of PAW Patrol Live! At Home. The opening Spin Master Entertainment logo was rescored, using the opening music from the Jim Henson Pictures and Destination Films logos.
In March 2021, "Believe It or Not (Theme from Greatest American Hero)" by Joey Scarbury and Adriana Rivera was confirmed to be the film's closing song. In June 2021, Myers announced that "The Final Countdown" by Europe and "Good Mood" by Adam Levine were attached to the soundtrack. He further hinted that "I Want Love" by Elton John was potentially Chase and Skye's romantic theme; however, in July 2021, the song was replaced with "Hero" by Nickelback. Several songs from the series were to return as the film's musical numbers, including "The Mer-Pup Song", "Chickaletta Polka", "Pup Like Me", "You Can Call on Me", "Pirate Pups on Sea Patrol", and "The Best of Friends", but were cut during post-production.
In March 2023, Myers confirmed that "Friendship Always Takes the Lead", a new song, would be performed by Shoniker. He stated that he cited the Pawston Anthem performed by Scooch Pooch from Go, Dog. Go! as inspiration.[62]
In July 2023, Bruno Mars was reported to be featured in the soundtrack, leading to speculation that Mars would voice Luke Stars, replacing Lyon Smith.[63]
Release
Streaming
The release was originally planned as a ten-episode miniseries, with two segments being cancelled in favor of releasing it as a eight-episode miniseries. A workprint of Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie was made available on Paramount+ on November 3, 2021 in the US. Canadian distribution was handled by Elevation Pictures. It was the first Paramount Pictures film to be produced by Columbia Pictures since The Adventures of Tintin (2011).
The film also debuted a new animated logo opening for Paramount Pictures, showcasing SpongeBob SquarePants interacting with characters from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Transformers, Sonic the Hedgehog, Blue's Clues, and PAW Patrol; and a rearranged score by Giacchino, finally returning after making the fanfare for the 2011 logo, with elements of the previous 1976 fanfare by the late Jerry Goldsmith. WindowsMyers2018 compared the new Paramount Pictures logo to the DreamWorks Animation logo first shown in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which showcased the boy on the moon interacting with characters, including Shrek. An early draft for the Paramount Pictures logo opening featured characters from Blaze and the Monster Machines, Dora the Explorer, Peppa Pig, and Big Nate.
Marketing
A pinball machine based on the film and a line of action figures by Spin Master were announced in July 2023. The first look at the PAW Patrol badge for the film was released on April 8, 2024, paying tribute to that year's total solar eclipse.[64]

Reception
Critical response
Cal Brunker's PAW Patrol: The Movie was generally considered to be an improvement over Brunker's previous movies and the theatrical release of PAW Patrol: The Movie, earning praise for its improved characterizations, but criticism for its darker and more serious tone in contrast to previous PAW Patrol media. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 86% of 102 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.8/10. Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 71 out of 100, based on 56 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". In comparison, the scores of the film are higher on both sites than what the theatrical cut received (80% and 50, respectively).
21Hhashmi praised the film's layout and characters, concluding that "this movie should deserve an Oscar and a Grammy". Wyatt.Newvine5 called the film superior to the theatrical release, saying, "Even though I hate the [theatrical] movie with a burning passion. This is great! It's like everything bad about the [theatrical] movie fixed. I was most happy when Everest and Tracker were in the movie because that was the main reason I hated the [theatrical] movie." Colonerl12 praised the film's script, adding that "everything looks real and amazing". Jon Shell gave the film a positive review, saying, "I think that would be a great movie." Trapper1023288, Rubble109, Andreasyt, and WarLord605 called the film "amazing", "so cool", and "so awesome".
In reaction to the theatrical cut's mixed reception, WindowsMyers2018 initially published a poster of Mayor Humdinger supporting critics who panned the PAW Patrol franchise (due to Humdinger being the PAW Patrol's archrival). On the other hand, Myers commented, "I know that it doesn't matter how certain audiences or critics felt about a film, but it isn't about hate against their thoughts. The only choice would need to accept it and move on".

The film was included on preliminary shortlists of major potential nominees for the 94th Academy Awards, including the Best Animated Feature and Best Adapted Screenplay categories with the final nominations to be announced on February 8, 2022.
